Singing Tips
If you enjoy singing, or would love to become a better singer and can't afford lessons, here are a few singing tips to keep your vocal chords healthy and warm!

• ALWAYS warm up your voice before singing any song
♪ Sing vowels of Ah, Eh, Ee, Oh, Ooh from notes 1 to 5 starting from your lowest confortable note.
♪ Move up the scale by a semitone each time until you reach the highest confortable note.
♪ Tongue twisters are very useful in waking up your mouth muscles!
Two Toads Terribly Tired Tried To Trot To Tetbury!
Red Lorry Yellow Lorry Big Brown Bus!
♪ Acknowledge where your break in your voice is from your chest voice (lower register, forceful
outward singing) and your head voice (higher register, raised soft palette and upward singing).
This way when you sing, you can establish where to change in a song so as to not damage your
vocal chords.
• Establish where to breathe in any piece of music you sing
♪ Breathing is one of the most vital elements of singing. by being sure of where you are breathing in
terms of phrases and how long you can last before taking another breath, the piece will become
easier to sing and sound professional and controlled.
♪ Your lungs must inhale and exhale fully to guarantee enough air to sing a phrase. When breathing,
you must engage your abdominal muscles and diaphragm to create support for your voice.
Inhaling fully will cause you chest to enlarge, and visa versa for exhaling. The diaphragm must be
where the strength of the voice comes from, else your vocal chords can damage from the force of
singing a strong or high note and having nothing to support it.
• Pick a song that suits your voice
♪ Every person will have their own tone, style and range confortable and suited to their voice. Try
singing different genres such as classical, jazz, pop, etc. You may realise, by trying new styles, that
your voice suits one more than the other, or that you enjoy to sing all of them.
